So, I am currently in the process of “de-toxifying” my house. What does that mean? Less harmful chemicals and more all natural products. And I wanted to share with you guys this amazing recipe that I have found and CANNOT wait to try! (That is, whenever I can pick up my 9 months pregnant, walrus feet out of my bed and stomp out of the house…)Â
All Natural, DIY Dishwasher Detergent
You just don’t know how happy this makes me! Yes, I’m weird- stop judging me (;Â
I cannot wait to throw out those, who knows what filled, dishwasher tablets and replace them with this cheap and simple masterpiece!
Have you ever noticed how expensive dishwasher detergent is?! Once, a very long time ago, little naive me tried to use dawn dish soap to save some money… It washes dishes in the sink, why wouldn’t it work in the dishwasher too? And it’s SO much cheaper!! haha I can’t help but to laugh at the younger me.
My husband, who was my then fiance, didn’t really see the humor in a kitchen filled with soap suds. I’m surprised he didn’t head for the hills then!!
So, I just sucked it up and have been paying for the expensive (non-soap sud filling) dish detergent. Luckily, we do bulk shop so I do save some money buying it in bulk, but that’s not the point. It’s also the fact that I have no idea what chemicals I am coating my dishes with. These are things that we put in our mouth or our food has direct contact with. And we all, normally, don’t even give it a second thought.
Until I ran across this recipe!
Today, I am going to share it with you and when you see that it only takes 4 ingredients and ONE step- you’ll be amazed and wonder why you haven’t tried this sooner (like me!)
Dishwasher Detergent Ingredients:
- 1 Cup of Baking SodaÂ
- 1 Cup of Washing Soda (You can find this at Walmart in the detergent aisle)
- 1 Cup of Epsom Salt
- 1/3 Cup of Lemi Shine (You can find this at Walmart next to the dishwasher detergent)
- 15-20 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil (This is optional, the Lemi Shine will give it a lemon smell but this will add a nice boost & the great disinfecting properties of the oil itself)Â
Directions:
- Mix all of the ingredients together
- Nothing, you’re done!!
Isn’t that awesome?! In less than 3 minutes, you’ve created your own all natural dish detergent!!
I am in love with this idea and I can’t wait to roll myself out of bed, waddle to Walmart, & pick up some ingredients to try this out!! If you try it, or have your own recipe, let me know how it works for you! I love hearing from you guys <3

I went to homemade cleaners a couple of years ago and I love it. This is very similar to what I use for my dishwasher detergent! I like recipes like this for dishwasher detergent because they don’t use borax!
I am so glad we are switching over all our products too! All natural is the way to go!! (;
Great name, great ideas! I’m greening up my house and personal care products too. So excited to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! If you get to try it before me, let me know how you like it!! I am so ready to pop this baby out and get to detoxifying our home even more (;
