I have spent so long searching for that “just right” fabric softener. Now, I know there are many out there and you may be reading this thinking I am crazy. I mean, they have a whole freaking aisle dedicated to this exact purpose- but my struggle is that I do not want those chemically filled, artificially fragranced softeners. (I’m picky-I know, my husband tells me that all the time…)
Luckily, I have found the one I’ve been searching for (: And get this, it will only cost you $5 to make!
See what dedication and persistence gets you- I’m picky for a reason! Or at least that’s what I tell my husband.
So, what did I find?
All Natural Vinegar & Lavender Fabric Softener
My heart is so happy right now. This fabric softener is great for your skin, your washing machine, and the environment. Ahhh- can’t you just smell the love (: okay, maybe that’s just me being weird…
This softener is awesome because you are replacing all those harmful, artificial fragrances and synthetic ingredients with all natural ingredients that are actually good for you!
It is able to naturally whiten whites, brighten colors, remove odors, and soften fabrics!
So, now on to the big question…
How does it work?

Vinegar has acidic properties that removes alkaline detergent & mineral deposits in your laundry (aka it softens your clothes). It is also an acetic acid which naturally combats mold, viruses, and bacteria. Plus, it naturally freshens your clothes!
Lavendar (my love) is able to naturally scent your laundry, so it smells wonderful! And, it has inherent germ fighting properties due to it’s antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, and fungicidal actions. That’s a lot of germ fighting going on right there! It is also a natural moth repellent- who knows when that may come in handy…
Now, that I have you in love with this fabric softener it’s time to know…
How to Make It:
Ingredients-
- 1 Quart of White Vinegar (the price for this on amazon is not what you’d typically pay in store)
- 1 Quart Glass Bottle (if you can buy your vinegar in a glass bottle, which many are sold in, then you will not need to buy one. Just use the bottle your vinegar comes in!)
- 25 drops of Lavender (make sure your oil is 100% pure like the brand I’ve linked- if you don’t know the importance of 100% pure essential oils then read my post here.)
- 1 tsp of Rubbing Alcohol (for emulsion)
Mix all of the ingredients together (swirl, do not shake) and swirl before each use to make sure they are mixed well every time.
To Use:
For a small load add 1/4 cup to the rinse cycle or fabric softener tray if your washing machine has one.
For a large load add 1/2 cup
That’s it!
It literally takes minutes to make and you use it just like any regular fabric softener.
BUT WAIT! That’s not it…
Other Uses:
This softener is so awesome that you can actually use it to naturally clean your washing machine! Add 1 cup to your hot water cycle and run empty. It will clean mold build up, soap scum build up, and mineral deposits! This is something that is great to do periodically and now you don’t have to make or buy something else to do the job.
How simple is that?!
WARNING:
Please, make sure that you do NOT mix vinegar with any chlorine bleach! This creates a toxic chlorine gas, so just take my word and stay away from all that!!
